It rises in the Rhodopes on a rocky peak with the same name, which is situated 5 km from the village of Ustren, Kardzhali region. The peak, with an altitude above sea-level of 1,114 m, on which the fortress rises, is almost impregnable. It has a majestic view over dozens of kilometres. It was built in the Middle Ages -10th c., and during its existence it was under the domination of the Byzantine Empire.
