Haskovo

Haskovo is located in Southern Bulgaria and not far from the border with Turkey and Greece. In the opinion of the archaeologists the first population on the territory of the contemporary city was about 5,000 BC. The Thracians called the town Marsa, and the locality - Asti. After the Ottoman Turks conquered the town it was renamed to Haskyoy. An interesting landmark in the city is the clock-monument, built in 1985 on the occasion of the celebration of the millennium from the establishment of Haskovo.

The fastest direct road connecting Europe to Asia and the Near East grows through the city.

Near Haskovo is located the village of Klokotnitsa, where in 1230 Tsar Ivan Assen II routed the troops of Theodor Komnin, the ruler of Epirus.
