Pirin Pirin is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria and the sixth highest in Europe. A large number of rivers rise from it, which belong to the catchment area of the Struma and the Mesta. There is one more notable waterfall – the Popinolashki (12 m). The greatest water wealth of Pirin is the beautiful lakes. They are of glacial origin and number 176. The biggest and the deepest one in Pirin is Lake Popovoto. The highest situated one is Lake Gorno Polezhansko (2,710 m). There are plants which can be seen only in Pirin – the Pirin poppy, Pirin meadow grass, Verbascum davidoffii, edelweiss, etc. The most popular tree in Pirin is the Baikusheva mura (white fir), named after its discoverer, the forester Baikushev. It is believed that it is more than 1,300 years old and its dimensions are: 24 m high, 2.2 m in diameter and 7.8 m in perimeter.
