In 1964, on the initiative of the Astronautics and Astronomy club in Varna, established in 1960, the construction of an observatory began. The building of the old open-air theatre in the central part of the sea garden was relinquished to the club. A planetarium (stellar hall) was added to the main building. The official opening ceremony took place on 22 May 1968. The observatory and the planetarium were named after the Polish scientist Nicolaus Copernicus. This was the first astronomical complex in Bulgaria comprising an astronomical observatory, a planetarium and a tower with a Foucault pendulum.
In 1998, by decision of the municipality, repair works of the planetarium building were conducted. The opening of the renovated modern complex was on 15 August 2002.
