The “St. John of Rila” monastery in Chiprovtsi is situated along the Chiprovska Ogosta River, 4 km from the little town of Chiprovtsi, which is popular with its carpets. Its beginning dates back from 10th c. and it is one of the 30 monasteries of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, which established Christianity in the country. It was used as a refuge during the revolt of Constantine and Fruzhin (15th c.) and the Chiprovtsi revolt (17th c.). The monastery was repeatedly destroyed and robbed in 19th c. and restored owing to wealthy Bulgarians. In the ossuary tower are preserved the bones of the victims from the Chiprovtsi uprising, among which are the names of the famous revolutionaries Panayot Hitov and Philip Totyu.
