RSSMarkeli fortress, Bulgaria
It is situated in the region of Karnobat municipality. A battle was carried on here in 756 between the Bulgarians, led by Khan Vineh, and the Byzantine under Emperor Constantine V Copronim). The Bulgarians lost this battle. The Markeli fortress was destroyed during a Koumanian raid on the Byzantine Empire in 1090.
